General Description

Overview

This Nuclear Engineering Degree Apprenticeship is a rare opportunity to launch a long-term engineering career at the heart of one of the UK’s most significant low-carbon energy programmes.

If you want to know about the requirements for this role, read on for all the relevant information.

You’ll combine academic study with hands-on industry experience, working alongside experienced engineers while completing a BSc in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering through a nationally recognised nuclear engineering apprenticeship standard.

This role is ideal for students who are passionate about engineering, sustainability, and large-scale infrastructure, and who want to play a meaningful role in the UK’s clean energy future.

The Programme

Over four years, you will complete the Level 6 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Degree Apprenticeship, blending structured academic learning with real-world engineering placements.

Year 1

  • Full-time residential study at a specialist nuclear engineering college in the South West of England
  • Strong grounding in engineering fundamentals, maths and applied science

Years 2–4

  • Block-release study combined with paid placements in live engineering teams
  • Practical exposure across areas such as:
  • Design and engineering
  • Core engineering and technical specification
  • Pre-operations and engineering processes
  • Engineering assurance and governance
  • Placements primarily based in London, with some travel to other UK sites

What You’ll Gain

  • A fully funded BSc degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Four years of paid, structured engineering experience
  • Mentorship from experienced nuclear and infrastructure engineers
  • Long-term career pathways within engineering, energy and major infrastructure
  • A competitive salary, pension and benefits package from day one

  • GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above in:
  • Mathematics
  • English (Language or Literature)
  • Minimum 102 UCAS points, achieved through either:
  • Three A-Levels (including Maths and a Science subject), or
  • A relevant Level 3 qualification (e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma) with strong mathematical content

Skills & Attributes

  • Strong interest in engineering, energy or sustainability
  • Analytical mindset with confidence in maths and problem-solving
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn in a technically complex environment
  • Adaptable, proactive and comfortable working across different teams
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work with multiple stakeholders
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism and ethical behaviour

Eligibility

  • Willingness to study residentially during Year 1
  • Openness to travel for placements as required
  • Right to work in the UK for the full duration of the programme

Why This Role Is Different

This is not a classroom-only apprenticeship. You will be contributing to live engineering challenges on a nationally critical infrastructure project, gaining experience that very few graduates ever access at this stage of their career. xwzovoh

If you’re motivated by impact, long-term career progression and working on engineering that genuinely matters, this programme offers a powerful start.
