Neway International are seeking a Senior Lawyer – Social Care SEND Specialism (Grade 9) to join our client based with Somerset Council.

Work Pattern: Attendance required at relevant Court hearings and meetings

Pay Rates:

  • PAYE: £43.69 per hour
  • Umbrella/Ltd: £60.00 per hour

About the Client

Somerset Council’s Legal Services team provides specialist legal support across Children’s Services, Adults, Housing and wider corporate functions. The SEND legal service plays a critical role in ensuring the Council meets its statutory duties under the Children and Families Act 2014, delivering lawful, fair and robust decision‑making for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

The Role

This senior position focuses on providing expert legal advice, representation and case management across SEND matters. The role involves handling complex tribunal cases, supporting assessment officers, advising on statutory duties and ensuring high‑quality legal practice across the SEND service. The successful candidate will be confident in managing high‑stakes casework and delivering clear, authoritative legal guidance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist legal advice on SEND matters, ensuring compliance with the Children and Families Act 2014 and related legislation.
  • Represent the Council in complex SEND tribunal cases, including preparation and attendance at hearings.
  • Support weekly case management with Senior Assessment Officers, advising on tribunal and mediation casework.
  • Triage tribunal and mediation cases, identifying priorities and risks.
  • Offer legal guidance and support across the wider SEND team.
  • Deliver training to colleagues and stakeholders on SEND legal frameworks and best practice.
  • Quality‑assure legal bundles and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Contribute to effective, child‑centred decision‑making across the service.

Candidate Requirements

  • Qualified and experienced Lawyer with strong knowledge of SEND legislation and tribunal processes.
  • Proven experience managing complex legal casework within a local authority or similar setting.
  • Strong advocacy skills and confidence in representing cases at tribunal.
  • Ability to provide clear, concise and authoritative legal advice.
  • Excellent analytical, drafting and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with assessment officers, managers and wider SEND teams. xwzovoh
